Woyzeck Review by Ellie Binks

Tuesday the 23rd and Wednesday 24th February saw two performances of this year’s Sixth Form play, Woyzeck by Georg Büchner. The plot of this play is sinister and strange and Freddie Wintrip, as the play’s main character Woyzeck, played his character’s strangeness (the result of having only been allowed to eat peas for a considerable period of time) disturbingly well. It is not so strange then that this production of Büchner’s strange play included doctors tying Woyzeck up with purple ribbons, two significant and bloody deaths and a deranged Captain, played effortlessly by Sam Jeffries, tormenting Woyzeck mercilessly. Bekka Taylor, playing the key role of Marie, Woyzeck’s partner, using a considerable amount of fake blood managed to achieve an impressively realistic death in Act Two. Also impressive was Pip Gray who, playing the role of Andres, Woyzeck’s best friend, ended the play poignantly when her character, strangely enough, also seemed to lose all sense of reality.

This ending of the play certainly seemed strange to some members of the audience. This highlighted how the plot of the story was confusing, partly due to Büchner’s death before its completion leading to various other playwrights finishing the play in their own way. Attention must therefore be drawn to the superb direction from Harriett Hare who, with Mike Bailey and Tilly Binns, created a dramatic performance that according to one audience member, Peter Elston, was ‘dark and creepy’ but still enjoyable to watch because of the high standard of acting and ‘sleek’ set changes. All of this praise comes from the hard work from Harriett who’s directing, said Mrs Adam the Speech and Drama Teacher at St. Olave’s, ‘rivals that of some professionals’. Many also commented on the choice made by the U6th to set our production of Woyzeck in the 1980s as the incorporation of one of Margaret Thatcher’s speeches helped to create a gripping start to the performance.

I am in agreement with the whole cast when I conclude by saying congratulations to the Sixth Form cast, crew and creatives for creating such a successful production. It is also important to mention Charlie Hubbard, whose help in realising Harriett’s vision with his technical expertise, allowed the show work so professionally.
