Mandalaband III Progress Report

29th June, 2008

David Rohl has added lots of new tracks to the Mandalaband MySpace page now. None of them is finished yet - there are still a lot of lead vocals to do, plus all of Ashley Mulford's guitars, Kim Turner's percussion and Geoffrey Richardson's violas and sax solos. Amongst the pieces to be heard is a rough mix of a new piece by Woolly entitled "Nimrod".

The plan is to release not one but two new concept albums - the first is to be called BC – Ancestors and will cover "the heroic age of our ancient ancestral history (leading up to the birth of Christ)". The second album will be entitled AD – Sangreal and concerns itself with "the Romano-Spanish legends surrounding the Holy Grail (minus King Arthur)".

www.myspace.com/mandalaband3

Woolly Contributes to New Mellotron Book

16th June, 2008

Desert Hearts’ new book on the Mellotron featuring a wonderful interview with Woolly on life, the Mellotron and everything, is due to be published on September 1st, but special preview copies may be ordered now direct from Desert Hearts, and will be available from Monday July 14th. Orders can be placed through the Desert Hearts web site, or by post using this order form.

The 592-page hardback book includes twenty-plus interviews with classic exponents of the Mellotronic art including the Moody Blues, Strawbs, King Crimson, Yes and Genesis as well as later groups like Steve Hackett, XTC, Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark, IQ, the Flower Kings and the 21st Century Schizoid Band.

Changes to Online Shop Payments

10th June, 2008

With effect from 20th June, we are switching our payment processor for the BJH online shop to PayPal. All this means in effect is that anyone paying by debit or credit card will get redirected to a PayPal payment page, but they will not have to sign up for an account with PayPal. Through PayPal we can accept not only Mastercard and Visa cards, but also Maestro, American Express, EC, Solo etc., plus direct payments from a bank account. These methods of payment are enabled already, so the only change will be that after June 20th you will not be able to use Visa or Mastercard without going through the PayPal page. Payments though the post by cash, cheque or Postal Order are unaffected.

Skyline 102.5FM in Southampton and Forest FM in Dorset broadcast a classic rock show called Dark Side Of The Moon, which regularly features BJH songs.

In two weeks' time BJH will have the featured album on the show, and you can decide which one! The only conditions are that it has to be from the 70s, it has to be a studio album and the presenter, Gary Jackson, will choose the tracks to be played from it.

Norman Smith

6th March, 2008

Norman Smith, the producer of Barclay James Harvest and Once Again, died on Monday, 3rd March, aged 85. In 1959 Smith started at Abbey Road Studios as a tape operator (as did Alan Parsons some time later) before becoming an engineer, working on all of the recordings by The Beatles until 1965 when EMI promoted him from engineer to producer. He produced Pink Floyd's The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucerful Of Secrets and Ummagumma, and The Pretty Things' S.F. Sorrow. In 1971 he began making his own records under the name Hurricane Smith and scored hit singles such as "Don't Let It Die" and "Oh Babe, What Would You Say?". He was active into his eighties, issuing a new CD including re-recordings of his hit singles in 2004, and publishing his memoirs, John Lennon Called Me Normal, in 2007.

Norman Smith, the producer of Barclay James Harvest and Once Again, died on Monday, 3rd March, aged 85. He produced Pink Floyd's The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, A Saucerful Of Secrets and Ummagumma, and The Pretty Things' S.F. He was active into his eighties, issuing a new CD including re-recordings of his hit singles in 2004, and publishing his memoirs, John Lennon Called Me Normal, in 2007.

30th August, 2007

Two 1968 BJH acetates were recently sold on auction site eBay, fetching over sixty Pounds each. The acetates (heavy test discs made for the band and a few record company executives) were a single-sided pressing of "Early Morning" and a double-sided disc of "Early Morning" and "Mr. Sunshine", and sold to a collector in Switzerland.

Amongst the other BJH items up for grabs on the same site is a copy of The Barclay James Harvest Story, our biography of the band which has been out of print for some time. See the eBay auction page for details. The site is well worth watching for the BJH fan, as they frequently have deleted CDs and vinyl on auction.
