John Milton: On The Morning of Christ's Nativity (1645)

This is completely ridiculous.

I'll be honest: strictly speaking, both today's and yesterday's strip have little to do with Milton's poem. That said, while I go out of my way to make most LB strips stand alone for the benefit of potential new readers, sometimes I've gotta draw comics just to amuse myself (and to amuse those who have read through all of the archives). In this case, I wanted to celebrate the birth of She-Jesus exactly one year ago today, since the goddess has had a disturbingly profound impact on Lit Brick as a whole.

Newbies puzzled by the Lord Thy Cheesecake can check out this brief summary I wrote about her on my Wiki.

John Milton: On The Morning of Christ's Nativity (1645)

The timing of this poem on my schedule was an incredible coincidence. In case you weren't aware, this is actually dangerously close to She-Jesus' real birthday, that being August 26th last year. I'd planned on celebrating the event, but I never imagined that the Norton would drop a poem about the nativity into my lap precisely on time. I'll consider it "fate" and move on.

I like Violet. I get the feeling that we'll be seeing her again sometime after this storyline is over. Anyway, if you're tiring of the Blazing World, fear not: it's only got one or two more strips left. If you want more of the Blazing World, then, um... sorry? Try reading "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier" instead.

First, the site was down for over three hours yesterday. It wasn't even remotely my fault, mind you, but I'll apologize anyway, especially to everyone on Twitter that had to put up with my whining.

Second, I've decided to not cover all of this novel, since it's longer than I thought. I've instead reverted to covering only the material excerpted in the Norton, which is fine, since said material is awesome and tells a more or less complete (albeit abridged) story.

Third, I had way too much fun drawing dead Molly.

I've been really busy as of late, and taking the time to think of something clever for these commentaries is, let's be honest, not my highest priority. If you follow me on Twitter, you'll know that I've been knee-deep in web design, creating and launching not only a new Flat Feet site, but also putting together a new Lit Brick site that runs off of Comicpress. This new site will bring with it a host of improvements on many different fronts, but it's a time consuming task because I need to manually copy and paste all of the 350+ commentaries for each comic.

So yeah, I'm a bit drained, which is why I'm quiet on the commentary front over here. But stay tuned, 'cause there'll be big changes in the next month or so.

There's something deeply unsettling about this comic. It went from "Hey, wouldn't it be funny if Nicholle lopped off a green guy's head like Sir Gawain?" to "Hey, wouldn't it be even funnier if it was like Jango Fett in Episode 2?" to "Oh God, I really shouldn't have drawn this."

Anyway, for the curious, Panel One translates to "Greetings, adorable bouncy girl!" while Panel Three is somewhat obviously "Father!"

In the book, Cavendish refers to all the creatures of the Blazing World as being "Bird-Men," "Fish-Men," etc. To today's pop culture addled brain, it makes them all sound like superheroes. Unless it's just me.

It's probably just me.

A comment yesterday pondered if the Bear-Man's language was a simple substitution or not. Well, it is, using one of Blambot's great fonts. That said, the Bear-Man isn't saying anything of interest, though some of it does make me laugh. If memory serves, his dialog in the third panel is "Stop talking, fat pale ape."

Before I forget, there's a great version of The Blazing World online here. That is, if you'd care to follow along outside of the comic.

In other news, there was a torrent of material at my Tumblr on Friday. I posted a third Molly blog comic, a second Deleted Sporkman strip, and four reformatted Flat Feet strips. You can find 'em all here.

Margaret Cavendish: The Blazing World (1666)

Alright, kids, this is gonna be fun.

The Norton only has a few pages of excerpts from the story, but since that's doing the book a grave disservice, I'll be reading the whole thing anyway. I hope you'll indulge me, since I think the entire tale is pretty cool and rife with mockable elements. I'm gonna just roll through it strip by strip, until you stop me or I get bored. Our story's heroine will be Nicholle, because I could logically see Molly cameoing her in the strip, but mostly because I wanted to draw her a lot. This probably won't end up as long as Twelfth Night, but time will tell.

Meanwhile at the new Tumblr blog, I've posted a second strip from Molly's so-called blog comic, again (fictionally) from 2006. Seriously, if you aren't bookmarking the blog or following it in some way, you'll be missing out on all kinds of goodies. It's full of stuff I'm drawing just for the hell of it; comics that don't really belong on any other website. Be sure to check it out and tell me what you think.
