PAN Endorses Sen. Specter's Cures Amendment

12/14/2009 - The Parkinson�s Action Network (PAN) today endorsed the Cures Acceleration Network (CAN) Act of 2009, introduced by Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) as an amendment to the health reform bill in the Senate. Sen. Specter�s amendment (SA 2866) puts a renewed focus on research and development in the health debate. Sen. Specter is Senate Co-Chair of the Bicameral Congressional Caucus on Parkinson�s Disease.

12/9/2009 - The health care debate is moving fast in the U.S. Senate, and members of the Parkinson's community can effect change for millions of Americans. Currently, neurology is not listed as a specialty eligible for primary care incentives in section 5501 of the Senate Health Reform Bill, even though family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, and geriatrics are included. This will mean that neurologists are the only physicians who regularly manage and coordinate care who are not eligible for the bonus.

PAN Celebrates NIH Approval of Embryonic Stem Cell Lines

12/2/2009 - The Parkinson�s Action Network (PAN) celebrates the National Institutes of Health�s (NIH) approval of 13 embryonic stem cell lines available for research. These stem cell lines will be available for federal funding under the guidelines finalized by NIH this summer, paving the way for cutting-edge research into better treatments and a cure for Parkinson�s and many other diseases.

12/2/2009 - The Parkinson's Action Network (PAN) is pleased to present the 16th Annual Research & Public Policy Forum, a day of education and advocacy, on February 17, 2010.
The PAN Forum will take place by virtual webcast, available online across the country. Participants will learn about the current legislative issues impacting the Parkinson's community and how to advocate for better treatments and a cure by communicating with elected officials and influencing change in Washington, DC.

11/3/2009 - October saw a major victory for the Parkinson's community as the Secretary of Veterans Affairs announced that Parkinson's disease will receive a presumption of service connection for disabled Vietnam veterans living with Parkinson's disease. Other updates on the Parkinson's disease registry bill, NIH and FDA funding, and Defense Parkinson's research are included in this month's Policy Focus.

10/28/2009 - Yesterday, October 27, Judge Royce Lamberth dismissed Sherely v. Sebelius for lack of standing. This is a case in which an embryo-adoption agency and the Christian Medical Association sued the Federal government to block new National Institutes of Health guidelines for stem cell research.

10/13/2009 - Eric Shinseki, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, established that Parkinson's disease will receive a presumption of service connection for disabled Vietnam veterans living with Parkinson's disease. Based on a July 2009 report by the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine (IOM), this decision simplifies and accelerates the benefits application process for Vietnam veterans with Parkinson's disease who were exposed to Agent Orange.

9/23/2009 - Congress is currently crafting legislation to overhaul the nation�s health care system. PAN is closely monitoring these proposals and is continuing to focus on gaining support for our legislative priorities, which includes the National MS and Parkinson�s Disease Registries Act, funding for the Department of Defense Parkinson�s research program, and funding for the National Institutes of Health and Food and Drug Administration.
