Heritage High School will be closed on Tuesday, January 10, due to an electrical problem. Students and staff do not report.

Heritage is expected to reopen on Wednesday.

All other Newport News Public Schools are operating on normal schedules.

Due to inclement weather, the football games scheduled for Saturday, September 17, at Todd Stadium are postponed. The games are rescheduled for MONDAY, SEPT. 19, at Todd Stadium:

CURRENT STATUS:

All Newport News public schools and offices will open on time on Wednesday, August 31.

To prepare for the opening of school next week, all teachers shall report to their school on Wednesday. All professional development sessions scheduled for teachers this week are cancelled.

The in-service for all security staff will be held as scheduled on Wednesday.

Reminders:

The middle school orientation for sixth-grade students scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31, is cancelled. The middle school open house scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday evening for students and parents will be held. The scheduled time for open house has been extended one hour: open house for all middle schools will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, August 31.
The open house for early childhood centers and elementary schools will be held as scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 1.
Orientation for ninth-grade students and new students will be held as scheduled from 8 – 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 2.

A districtwide automated phone message will be sent to our ECC, elementary, middle school and ninth-grade families about the open house and/or orientation schedule.

Closings and Employee Reporting Times
All Newport News public schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, August 30. To prepare for the new school year, the following employee groups should report on time on Tuesday:

All 12-month employees
All principals and assistant principals
10 and 11-month transportation staff shall report as directed by their supervisor. Bus drivers: your routes will be available for pickup after 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cancellations

The child nutrition employee meeting scheduled for Tuesday at Gildersleeve is cancelled
The in-service for security staff scheduled for Tuesday is cancelled

The aftermath of the storm has left much of the Peninsula without electricity and phone service. Like many homes and businesses, our school buildings are affected by outages. As of 3 p.m. today, the following schools do not have electricity: Dutrow, Epes, Hidenwood, Hilton, Jenkins (partial power), Nelson, Riverside, Sanford (partial power), Yates (partial power), Crittenden (partial power), Huntington (partial power), and Denbigh High.

Teachers and other staff members may report to their school/worksite to continue with back-to-school preparations. Please note that if your school/worksite is without power (or with partial power in parts of the building) there will be no lights and no air conditioning.

Athletics and Other Student Activities

Athletic practices and events will be held as scheduled on Tuesday.
Band practice may be held as scheduled on Tuesday. Band directors will provide specific details for each band.
The remote TV production training camp will be held as scheduled at 9 a.m.

Middle School Orientation/Open House

CURRENT STATUS:

All Newport News public schools and offices will be closed on Tuesday, August 30.

Essential personnel shall report on time. Essential personnel includes senior staff, plant services staff, custodial staff, human resources staff and technology staff. All transportation employees scheduled for training shall report on time.
6th Grade Orientation scheduled for August 31 has been cancelled.
Teachers will be allowed to work in their classrooms if they choose to.

June 10, 2011: Greenwood Elementary is experiencing a power outage due to a faulty transformer. All teachers and their students will be transported to Woodside High School and students may be picked up there by their parents or will be transported home on the school bus at their regular afternoon dismissal time.

All Greenwood after school programs have been cancelled.
