The Space Between Comic #206 - Zap to the Extreme!

Comic Blurb: I try to avoid picking on other webcomics (though I question if Sonichu really is a "web" comic), I also don't usually try to troll people with mental disabilities, but there is a line to be drawn. There are some serious trolls out there who keep track of his entire life, and honestly, I don't care about his cross dressing or the "recycling". But there is a huge issue with this comic.

The blatant copyright infringement, the narcissism, and the fact that half the time he uses it as a way to promote himself to get women is just a ton of problems that some comics have, but he managed to do it within the first 30-something pages. Now, I've been guilty of bitching about being single, but I was 18, so at that age, that is all you have for problems. He was 24. This is why I hate certain people who use the term "nerd" or "geek" as a cover-up for the fact that they refuse to grow up and refuse to take responsibility for their lives. Obviously I qualify as a nerd... or geek... I never understood the difference between the two, but I'm sure I'll be trolled for it later.

Anyways, you do NOT do a webcomic to promote yourself, you do NOT do it if you're just trying to make money. I started Space to establish myself as a comicker to help with other projects that I thought would be more successful, but obviosuly, things changed. Space took off and got pretty popular, though I managed to fuck it up a bit. But I was not promoting myself to get a girlfriend, and I haven't tried to force you guys to write to Nintendo or anything like that to push merch. That seems to be all Sonichu does.

Personally, I think fanfic is stupid, but I respect the people who are dedicated enough to something to draw it. I respect the people who have the creativity to expand upon their favorite stories and characters. And I respect the fact that it is a labor of love, knowing that when they start it, there isn't gonna be a payoff. There won't be video games, anime, or anything. Maybe they get an offer as a writer for some of these things, but that's so farfetched it isn't even something to hope for. CWC seems to think Nintendo is actually going to add Sonichu to Pokemon.

But even though I have only read the first two and a half books, I read through the TVTropes page. How can you dedicate entire storylines to killing the people at 4-Chan (sorry, 4_cent-garbage), have sub-comic stories about rescuing imaginary women that love you, or just.... ugh!

I won't bother critiquing the art style, the all-caps comic sans font, or any of the "common" complaints. It's everything else that's wrong. The racism, homophobia, copyright crap, and then the shock that you've been trolled.

But there is a good part to it. Comics like this show exactly how NOT to do a comic. It makes me want to raise my standards when I write and draw Space. It makes me appreciate the fact that, overall, I've been lucky to not have more than a handful of trolls in the 2+ years the comic's been around. So I guess it was a good thing for me to read.

But man oh man, what a fucking headache.

The Space Between Comic #203 - Her Hair Keeps Getting Bigger!

Comic Blurb: See! It's her fault!

I'm not gonna feed you a bunch of bullshit. I did have some things to do, but mostly I needed a break to re-charge my batteries. I made this comic into a job more than a hobby (which I mentioned in a Tumblr blog), something I didn't realize until I took a step back.

Right now, the plan is to run these kind of comics every Friday to get myself warmed up, plus to allow myself some time to build up a buffer. This might take a month, month and a half, at which time I will return with real comics, also only updating on Fridays. I know you guys liked the three updates a week thing, but that is too much for me to manage. I might bring it back to two updates a week at some point, but I am planning on buying a house at the end of the year, plus all of my vacations this year I will actually be going somewhere, so I don't want to end up on another hiatus. So I will see you guys next week with a comic I started to draw two weeks ago!

Oh, and I love you, Nohely. Please don't kill me. (She would like you all to know she's Dominican, not black. She just has black-people hair).

The Space Between Comic #202 - Brady's Skirt

Comic Blurb: Before anyone freaks out completely, I am NOT quitting the comic. Not entirely. Just taking an extended break.

I know I alluded to this last week with the filler, and I've been contemplating it for a bit. The problem is a combination of things, mostly time.

When I first started Space, it was just something to do for fun when I was sick of playing video games. My social life was essentially non-existant, and I was working the graveyard shift, so it's not like I had anything else to do at 3 in the morning.

Now I have a pretty active social life, and while I will not blame them, the fact is I don't have the endless amount of time I used to have. Right now, doing the comic is starting to feel like slave work, and it got old really quick.

And while that is part of the reason why the hiatus earlier this year was going on, I'm coming to the realization that my ambitions are becoming greater than I have time to do. When I came back from that hiatus, I had big plans, hoping to improve my art in my free time, but that free time has never materialized. I've barely had time to work on the comic, so the art has gone completely to shit. Even my girlfriend has pointed that out.

As much as I love doing this comic, I can't bring myself to deliver crap like I have been doing. The writing I'm fine with, but the art is bringing it down to Sonichu levels lately. I'm not quitting, like I said. I have plenty written, and I want to finish this, but I would rather take a little longer than put out crap.

Keep an eye on Twitter, I'll try updating Tumblr and dA as well, and the RSS feed will have updates along the way as well. Hopefully when I'm back you won't even recognize the art, and while it's tempting to pull a Super Fogeys and turn the art over to someone else, my pride is getting in the way.

For those of you who check back from here on out, thank you. For those who don't, I understand. This is something I have to do. I made this choice a week ago, gave it time before I really decided on it, and it just seems right. I can't give you a timeline, but don't expect the comic to start again before the first of the year.

Thank you for everything in the past year and a half, and any future support you give me,
-Shane

The Space Between Comic #202 - Brady's Skirt

Comic Blurb: Let me just state this: I think Tom Brady is THE BEST quarterback in the league right now. Not ONE OF the best. THE best. Peyton may have the stats, but Brady has the rings. And remember, I'm a Bills fan.

However, he is NOT tough. I know he allegedly played with broken ribs, but that guy calls for more flags than Chad Ochocinco, especially if a lineman so much as grazes him. He wants flags when he gets sacked cleanly.

And now, I'm sure all of you are wondering "Why isn't this a real comic?" Well, truth be told, I had a nice buffer built up last week since I knew I would be busy. Unfortunately, I was one comic short. As opposed to rushing through that and leaving myself behind again, I figured I'd throw this up, hope you guys got a chuckle, and get back to work. I know a lot of you aren't happy with the update schedule lately (my traffic has been cut in half since this all started 5 months ago), but it is what it is. I'm not giving you all my reasons again, but just know that I may miss an update or two, but I will not go on another hiatus.

If I do go on any sort of unannounced hiatus, it'll be the last, and you can put this in the "Inactive Folder" for a while. I'm not gonna give up on the comic any time soon, but if it gets to the point where I still can't get a decent and consistant update schedule going again, I would much rather just stop doing it for a while than string you all on again.

But this is all hypothetical. I'm gonna go back to work on Monday's comic now.

The Space Between Comic #200 - Beware of Dog

Comic Blurb: Well if she used Coppertone® Sun Screen she wouldn't have this problem!

Also, I would like to amend my plan from Wednesday. No more "Workless Wednesdays" at all. Don't get too excited - I'm not planning on running anything on here at all! Instead, I want to try and finally finish Jelly Bean Sniper, something I've tried to do a few times in the past two years or so. Unfortunately, the math doesn't equal out, so there might not be three updates a week on here until October, but this is something I feel I need to do, traffic be damned.

Comic Blurb: So my plan is to continue running these Workless Wednesdays until September, when I will resume the three updates a week schedule. I'm trying to work on a buffer since I want to play a lot of video games during the winter. There are a ton coming out that will be very time-consuming (most noteably Skyrim and Saint's Row The Third), and since the chapter won't be wrapped up by then, I'd like to get as much of a buffer as possible.

The Space Between Comic #196 - Fake Out

Comic Blurb: I know, I know, it's a day late. But at least it's a real comic.

I would like to sort of apologize for the last few comics. I only did them consecutively because I've had major writer's block. I came back from that hiatus with three scripts done, and I have only come up with a couple more. I'm still struggling with it, so I just decided to post those comics, hoping a flood would start.

No such luck. I am happy with this script, and while it might not be the best script I've ever written, it's not some piece of crap forced out. All in all it's a pretty good comic, but it leaves me in a corner.

Those who don't do writing don't get it, but you CAN back yourself into a corner, even with four main characters in four different locations. C.J. is pretty much a non-factor for the rest of the chapter, Jack is "busy", Frank is in a taxi, and Sam is at work. I'm sure ALL of you are sick of the interiors of YMSK and Jack's house by now, so I need to get back to writing.

And just so you know, I typed this blurb before finishing this comic and solved my writer's block! Yay! Venting works!

Comic Blurb: I switched it up - workless Wednesday today, real comics Wednesday on Friday. Anyone who plays Pokemon gets this joke, if you don't, getting it explained won't help.

The Space Between Comic #194 - Very Sneaky

Comic Blurb: For those of you unfamiliar with the original Pokemon games, the actual line is "I saw your feat from the grass." Unfortunately, a lot of idiots think it's a typo and it should actually say "feet". Those who aren't Adam Sandler fans don't get this joke.

Comic Blurb: Here's some nudity for once! What, not what you were expecting?

Also, slight cameo from Alone in a Crowd on the DVD. Not sure if this is a movie Passion Studios would do, but no matter!

I'll work on a wallpaper of the last panel if you guys want one.
