Valley demand for education grows; UFV full to capacity

UFV has so many students wanting to study at its Fraser Valley campuses that it is now full…and then some. Projections indicate that the university will operate at up to 108 per cent of its government-set target in the coming academic year.

UFV’s Provost and Vice-President Academic Eric Davis notes that admitting students beyond government-funded capacity is not a good situation. “We do not receive any extra funding for critical student services such as library resources, advising, counseling, writing and math centres, student life activities, registration help, or even parking,” says Dr. Davis.

We’ve all done it. You hear the word ‘scientist’ and automatically picture a geeky-looking guy in a lab coat. It’s a typical stereotype.

The University of the Fraser Valley aims to break down those stereotypes, especially in the sciences, by proactively encouraging women to study or pursue research in disciplines like science, computing, and engineering.

Look out! Road closures are in effect on Chilliwack's Elk View and Ryder Lake Roads.

The Fraser Valley Conservancy is requesting periodic closures during the western toad migration to the area's wetlands. The Species at Risk Act lists the western toad on the province's Yellow List as a "species of conservation concern."

‘Bridging the Human’ theme for this year’s Literary Café at Harrison

A novelist, poet, playwright, artist, and two violinists are featured at this year’s Literary Café, an annual Harrison Festival of the Arts event. The “Bridging the Human” theme stems from the idea that life is a series of bridge-building: between self and others, with one’s own humanity, and with the Greater Than Us -- seen and invisible.
Co-sponsored by University of the Fraser Valley Continuing Studies, the Literary Café is a long-established and popular staple event of the Harrison Festival. This year's edition will take place at 7:30 pm on Monday, July 12.

UFV’s therapy dog helps students through tough times

It’s not unusual to see a dog on the campus green at the University of the Fraser Valley — UFV has a fairly generous pets-are-welcome policy. Dogs have even been seen wandering campus hallways and hanging around offices. But Macbeth, a six-year-old golden retriever, not only has the run of the campus; he also has his own office and job title.

Former UFV student Glen Baier now Teaching Excellence award winner

f you want to be a great teacher, you should learn from great teachers. That’s a lesson one could take from the selection of Dr. Glen Baier of Yarrow as this year’s winner of the Teaching Excellence award at the University of the Fraser Valley. Baier teaches philosophy at UFV.

One of UFV’s defining features is the focus on teaching excellence that has been in place since the 1970s. Baier can attest to that, as he started his post-secondary education at what was then Fraser Valley College back in 1982.

Moms-to-be needed by UFV nursing students

If you’re a pregnant woman who will be having her baby in a Fraser Valley hospital between September and April, you’re in high demand by University of the Fraser Valley nursing students.

Mothers-to-be who will be having their babies in the Fraser Valley are once again invited to help a UFV nursing student learn about pregnancy and childbirth from the patient’s perspective. Women having their babies at Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey Memorial, Ridge Meadows, Peace Arch, Langley Memorial or Royal Columbian hospitals are eligible for this program.

Countless UFV nursing students have had the opportunity to shadow a pregnant woman through doctor visits, prenatal classes, labour and delivery, and the postnatal period through the Moms-to-be program over the past 15 years.

Yarrow volunteers win Betty Urquhart service award

There is a popular saying that goes: ‘if you build it, they will come.’ In Yarrow, they built it, they came, and now it’s the perfect example of a thriving community enterprise.

Years back, the village of Yarrow — a tiny burg, population about 2,200, nestled between Abbotsford and Chilliwack — needed a new community hall. It was a costly venture and the residents raised money through a number of activities including weekly bingos. Eventually the old, damp, leaky hall was replaced with a new building that now houses the Yarrow library, a preschool, a seniors group, several meeting rooms, and an industrial kitchen that has been called a caterer’s delight.

As a teen, he played in the Abbotsford organization, moved on to the metro league, earned a spot on the B.C. team, and ended up on the Canadian junior national team.
