Yes, Dynamite and Detonator have gone to a nightclub. There’s music and a restaurant bar and everyone’s over twenty-one. What’s up with that?

Normally, when things like this happen in cute cartoons, the audience expects the story to turn dark. The cuteness becomes ironic as sweet-looking characters get drunk, pick fights and swear a lot. I can assure you that this is not going to happen in Urban Underbrush. You folks don’t need me to re-write Pearls Before Swine for you.

Despite the venue, the content won’t change much. I promise that no one will drink to excess and Dynamite and Detonator themselves will consume nothing stronger than a handful of pretzels. In short, Urban Underbrush will remain innocent - or at least as innocent as it was before.

Meanwhile, the Urban Underbrush Reader's Poll is still up. You can take the poll Here.

Sometimes, nothing is as empowering as not caring. Just be cautious, this power is easily over used.

In other news, I'm using a new lettering guide for this batch of comics. The words are a little more legible, don't you think?

This particular comic was based on an idea from my eleven year-old cousin. Two weeks ago, when I visited his family, he pitched me roughly eight-hundred comic ideas. This one was my favorite.

Okay, so now Caius is a permanent resident. Actually, I had always planned on adding Caius to the cast. I just had to wait until the story was ready for him.

There you have it. Caius fits in. He's a resident now. He's not going away. He's even been added to the Cast Page.

So, now Caius is running loose with a sack full of bombs. This might not end well.

How's today's comic working for you? I like this one well enough, but the six panel format creates a dilemma for script writing. When I have a lot of panels to use, I often spend some off them advancing the story and some of them telling the joke. In an ideal comic strip, every panel should be building up to the joke at the end. The exposition stuff may make for a overall stronger story, but it takes away from the individual comic if it's not contributing to the joke as well. One of my new year's resolutions is to write more Urban Underbrush comics that are both part of a bigger story yet still enjoyable on their own.

In case you're concerned, graphic novels follow a different set of rules, so the structure of Draconis Wicked probably won't change much.

Here's where the wheels start coming off.

I have an odd feeling about this strip. I feel like this is where Caius has tipped his hand and revealed his true, sinister nature to the audience. But actually, I never hid the fact that Caius was dishonest, so it's not exactly a big reveal, is it?

I'd like to elaborate on this one, but the joke is just too simple. Any comments I make will just end up over-explaining it. I'll just say that this is one of my favorite Urban Underbrush comics.

Urban Underbrush Comics

Comic Notes

We've made it to 100 comics! No, I didn't do a special comic for the 100th installment or the Thanksgiving holiday (although I did write a food joke. Does that count?) I want to keep moving the story along and I don't plan on stopping it for every milestone.

It is nice that the 100th comic just happened to land on Thanksgiving. It makes it easier to acknowledge how grateful I am to have this website. I'm also grateful to you, the readers, for helping to make this possible. Since Lepus Studios started, a lot of readers have come and gone (and I suspect that several of my departed twitter followers were only using me for links backs) but many of you have been following from the start and many of you have jumped on later and never left. To think that there are people out there who are willing to give my work their time and attention is very flattering and a little overwhelming. So thanks.

I read The Tragedy of Julis Caesar in the tenth grade and right away I wanted to name a character after Caius Cassius. He was kind of unlikable in an appealing way.

Props to Liz, who helped write today's punchline.

I don't care for pumpkin ravioli myself, but it sounds like the kind of vegetarian meal Clayton would like.

I've decided to start changing the seasons in Urban Underbrush. Up unitl now, it's always been summer. But I guess by now, Dynamite and Detonator have been in town for a few months. It's time to adjust the landscape.
